Dear Vanessa Heggie,
My name is Megan Ervin. I am a senior at Bolivar Central High School. I am doing a multi-genre project for my English IV Honors class. In the multi-genre project, we were assigned to do 8 different works of writing, one being an email to an expert on the topic we chose. My topic is on gender testing in sports. I have done two of my genre projects on two different articles you either wrote or commented on about gender testing. I really have enjoyed reading your articles. The articles have given me so much knowledge about the history of how gender testing began. The assignment, itself, has opened my eyes to things that I didn't even know went on in sports.
My question to you is about how you think a gender test should be performed? Do you believe in the invasive process or do you think it should be as discreet as possible? No doubt, however the test is performed it should be efficient. All of the points you gave in your article, "Sex testing and the Olympics: myths, rumors, and comfirmation bias," were substantial but also could be easily done without much change. I think the most effective way would be to use the swabbing technique. This technique is just as effective as well as discreet.
I would love to discuss more of this with you. Please email me back as soon as possible at meganervin@rocketmail.com. Thanks so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Megan Ervin
